Charmed Circle: A Fly Fishing Haven in the Heart of the Catskills
Welcome to our inaugural blog post, where we embark on a captivating journey to uncover the essence and allure of the Charmed Circle—a legendary fly fishing destination nestled in the breathtaking landscape of the Catskill Mountains. In this post, we will delve into what makes the Charmed Circle so special, its geographical location, the rivers and streams that compose it, and the historical significance it holds within the angling community.
Imagine a place where pristine waters flow through idyllic valleys, surrounded by lush green forests and majestic peaks. Such a place exists within the boundaries of the Catskills, New York—dubbed the “Charmed Circle of The Catskills” by Cecil E. Heacox in a two part essay published in the March and April issues of Outdoor Life in 1969. He wrote, “I call this region charmed because its fine fishing in wild, forested settings has survived even though it is within a day’s drive of one-sixth of the population of the United States and Canada.” He added, “The story of the Charmed Circle is touched with a mystical quality, trademark of the Catskills since the days of Rip Van Winkle.”
Situated in Sullivan County, the Charmed Circle finds its home within the southern part of the Catskill Mountains, approximately 100 miles northwest of New York City. Its remote location provides a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, immersing anglers in a serene environment where nature’s beauty reigns supreme.
In the articles published by Heacox in 1969, he writes about this fishery for its exceptional and abundant fly fishing opportunities in the following seven Catskill streams: Rondout, Esopus, Schoharie, Beaverkill, Willowemoc, Neversink, and the Delaware. At the heart of the Charmed Circle though, lie two legendary rivers—the Beaverkill and the Willowemoc—both of which have played a pivotal role in the history of fly fishing in the United States. The Beaverkill, often referred to as the “Birthplace of American Dry Fly Fishing,” has a storied past that dates back to the early 19th century. Flowing for approximately 44 miles, it offers a diverse range of fishing experiences, from peaceful stretches with gentle currents to challenging pocket water that tests an angler’s skills.
Adjacent to the Beaverkill, the Willowemoc River winds its way through picturesque landscapes, further adding to the allure of the Charmed Circle. Known for its brown and rainbow trout populations, the Willowemoc has its own unique character, characterized by riffles, pools, and hidden eddies that create ideal habitats for trout to thrive.
The Charmed Circle holds a deep historical significance within the angling community. It was here, in these very waters, that the American dry fly fishing technique was refined and popularized. Influential figures such as Theodore Gordon and Harry Darbee, among others, made significant contributions to the development of this angling tradition.
The Catskill Mountains, including the Charmed Circle, also served as a muse for celebrated authors and artists, who captured the magic of the area through their writings and paintings. Their works immortalized the beauty and allure of the Charmed Circle, drawing attention and admiration from fly fishing enthusiasts worldwide.
Today, the Charmed Circle continues to attract anglers seeking an authentic fly fishing experience. Its historical significance, coupled with the abundance of trout and the pristine beauty of the surroundings, creates an atmosphere that exudes reverence and appreciation for the art of fly fishing.
